I'm working on militaristic action music the next two years, and it might very well start to bug me at some point. So I would really love to do something of a different pace and mood.

The pace I can work at depends alot on the budget. The higher the budget, the more I can set aside my other game music gigs....

Anyway, I'm quite interested in most genres which arent militaristic action [img]biggrin.gif[/img]

How much do you charge btw? Not for pro jobs - for people like us making guerilla style low/no budget stuff.

Where do other people get their composers from? Shooting People? I want to get a score done for my next film project (rather than me trying to edit scenes around existing music). I'm hoping that composers on Shooting People will have showreels they can send out on DVD etc to demonstrate how they have scored scenes rather than just giving music clips alone which don't demonstrate the ability to score to an edit.

Anyone got any experience with this?

Always a tricky question. There are so many factors to count in, such as how fast the music is needed, and what quantities. So I could give you an exact quota based on stuff like, amount of musik needed, total estimated budget, and how fast the music would be needed.

As a rule of thumb I would say 10% of the budget for a feature. But then again if this feature is being shot for ?500 and 30minutes of music were needed I think I would kindly pass [img]biggrin.gif[/img]

As for composers. Well there are pleanty of people willing to score shorts, or even features for nothing but credit. Generaly from what I have heard, the results range from terrible to sufficient - but you might even find someone who could do an outstanding job.

However realisticaly there are several reasons why people who score for free cant turn up as good resulst as professionals. Primarily people who score anything for credit aren't quite there yet where they can actually change for what they do (although I have heard exceptions. However in some cases the people behind the camera arent quite there yet, where they can be paid for what they are doing, so in many cases its great for both parties - getting loads of experience! Anyway not being paid can creates the problem that they likely havent got the cash to buy state of the art equipment and samples. Top notch stuff costs alot of money, and can be compared to top-notch shooting equipment in terms of price. This will in many cases result in a very synthy, or midi'ish score. But again I must stress that there are exceptions, and there are people out there who are doing stuff for free who should be charging.

Here's an idea...

How about a sticky at the top where composers can post a short summary about themselves with a link to some clips of their work. This would then be a great resource for the film-makers looking for a composer.

Nigel - how about it? And what do others think?

If we feel it's getting a bit cluttered with stickies already - what about combining some of those camera ones - do we need 3 different ones ALL about cameras - that could easily be one sticky - maybe two at the most (one for DV one for film).

The reason for the camera stickies is that there always seems to be some newbie that wants that info filling up the board.

I will stick it up there and if it takes off it will stay for a while if nothing happens I will send it back down...
